The Barn

The Barn Secondary dwelling Project

Project Overview

‘The Barn at Range View’ was conceived as a holiday homestay by our clients. The brief was to create a simple yet striking building that worked cohesively within its rural setting.

As the site was semi-off grid, passive design techniques were at the forefront of our approach. The design emphasised clean lines and mixed materials to create a strong, beautiful and tactile piece of architecture with sustainability at its core.

The building shape, while following the lines of a traditional rural barn is actually anything but. The efficiency of the roof form, north facing double glazed windows, insulation and cladding as well as the use of thermal mass flooring, combine to maintain comfortable year-round temperatures and low energy costs.

The Barn is so much more than a simple secondary dwelling; it is as hard working as it is beautiful and the end result feels timeless in its surrounds.

What they say

When we embarked on our journey to renovate, extend and create a farmstay for others to enjoy the Highlands countryside, Justin understood the vision and ran with it. His enthusiasm to create something modern, special and to complement the surroundings was on point. Of course, his attention to create something sustainable and efficient was always considered. We couldn’t have asked for a better team to help us create and implement our project. Not suprisingly, Justin has been our ‘go to’ for several projects since and we continue to recommend him to our clients as he continues to deliver each project to his usual high standard.
