As the site was semi-off grid, passive design techniques were at the forefront of our approach. The design emphasised clean lines and mixed materials to create a strong, beautiful and tactile piece of architecture with sustainability at its core.
The building shape, while following the lines of a traditional rural barn is actually anything but. The efficiency of the roof form, north facing double glazed windows, insulation and cladding as well as the use of thermal mass flooring, combine to maintain comfortable year-round temperatures and low energy costs.
The Barn is so much more than a simple secondary dwelling; it is as hard working as it is beautiful and the end result feels timeless in its surrounds.
