Shepherd St New Build, Secondary Dwelling Project

Project Overview

Shepard Street is located in a heritage conservation area zoning in the heart of Bowral, NSW which posed some challenges when designing the modern secondary residence that our client was looking for. Building height restrictions, the proximity of surrounding neighbours, council controls and site constraints were all overcome to deliver a beautiful, contemporary building.
 

Part of the brief was to maximise the size of the second dwelling without overshadowing or compromising the privacy of the existing house.  Our design uses a double height wall and mezzanine to emphasise the light and space within.  The east facing walls to neighbouring dwellings have small or no windows and allowance was made for a fully private yard on the west surrounded by mature trees.  Double glazed north facing windows and functional interior spaces create the feeling of a building with a much larger footprint.

This building really does demonstrate how good design can overcome limitations and constraints.  We love how the mixing of materials with reclaimed brick, raw timbers and steel cladding come together to create a highly contemporary building that still works within its more traditional surroundings.
