Ernest Street could be described as a ‘battle-axe block’ meaning the house is built behind another at the street front and is accessed by a private driveway. This adds a lovely element of seclusion amidst established gardens, and a smaller block creates real opportunity for creative design.
Considered window placements formed an integral part of the design, taking advantage of the northerly aspect by bringing light into the building and creating thermal mass throughout the day. There is a light filled, double height section in the centre of the house and a loft style floor (utilising typically lost space) for bedrooms. Double glazing, insulation and cladding as well as solar panels combine to create optimal year-round energy efficiency.
Ernest Street is a great example of how good design and creative thinking can deliver style, function, and efficiency – while still maintaining a smaller footprint.
